1809 C-4 R2 Large 0 over Small 0 PCGS Unc Detail Damage. Frosty light steel brown and tan faded to chocolate on the highpoints. Traces of tan faded down from mint color are visible on both sides, and an arc of slightly darker olive brown toning covers the left half of the obverse. There is no trace of wear on this piece, but there is a trail of five dull pinpricks from the eye down to the bottom of the neck. These small contact marks blend perfectly into the toning and do not catch your eye. Otherwise this piece is lustrous and free of any notable defects, and the eye appeal is excellent. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0. The "circle inside 0" feature is clear and dentils are visible around the entire obverse and most of the reverse. A very nice example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Our grade is MS60 sharpness net AU55. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Only 2 graded MS at PCGS. (PCGS # 35230) Value $2,000 - UP

1810 C-1 R1 G5. Slightly sharper but there are two small dents on the reverse: one at the bottom of the N in CENT and a smaller one on the second A in AMERICA. A glass also reveals some faint hairline scratches on the portrait, all hidden in the toning. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel. Uniform extremely fine granularity covers the planchet. This piece was struck two times. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet The second strike was about 70% off center. On the second strike the reverse die struck the planchet at the lower left of the reverse, and the obverse was struck against an off-center blank planchet leaving an indent at the left top of that side. The new blank planchet received an off-center brockage impression from the obverse of this piece during the second strike. A clear, easily explained mint error. Value $300 - UP

1831 Original Cohen-1 Breen 1-A R6. PCGS graded EF-40. Glossy medium brown blending to darker olive in protected areas. The highest points of the devices are a lighter shade of tan suggesting this piece was very lightly cleaned long ago. No spots or stains and the only mark is a horizontal nick midway between star 2 and the neck. Experts including Walter Breen and Jim McGuigan have classified this piece as one of the "business strikes" of the 1831 original (although such a distinction could be considered an academic exercise at this point with expert opinions on both sides). It is the 4th piece listed in the Breen census of business strikes (see the Breen half cent encyclopedia, page 341). Either way this is a very nice example of the 1831 original, a date that is missing from many advanced collections. Our grade is VF30. Weight 82.8 grains.
